From Kevin Kermes and Build the Career Your Deserve

Companies have paid me millions to put the right person in the right job. Now you can…

Use my “insider’s secrets” to get any job you want

Dear Friend,

It’s true. Companies invest hundreds of millions of dollars — every year — looking for the right people to bring on board. They have internal recruiters, extensive databases, and search firms working hard for them.

In fact, the whole application and interviewing process is designed for the companies that are hiring, not for you: the job seeker. Sure, there’s some advice out there, but it’s the same advice being offered to everyone – regardless of how long they’ve been working or what they do.

So who’s out there really working for you?

I’ve been on the front lines…sitting in offices and boardrooms with executives talking about what they liked – and didn’t like — about individual candidates. What impressed them – and what made them say, “Next!”

Look, you know as well as anyone that the economy is tough. There are more people out there looking than there are jobs available. And, the further along you are in your career, the more difficult it is. After seeing and hearing the frustration of people like you for over a decade — and seeing the cards stacked in favor of the companies doing the hiring – I had enough. I knew it was time to change the process from the inside out.

Discover the Fortune 500 secrets to getting the interviews you want — and the job you deserve

I’ve worked with countless Fortune 500 companies on their recruitment processes and have run over a thousand executive searches. Now I want to share their techniques, strategies — and secrets — with you…to make sure you have every possible advantage when trying to find your perfect job.

That’s why I’ve developed my exclusive personalized job search coaching program.

When I first told Emily I wanted to hire you, she was really skeptical. But when she started seeing the change in me, she actually said she was happy that I hadn’t listened to her (I think that’s the first time she’s ever said that!) After being unemployed for 6 months, I was definitely losing confidence. You helped me get it back and really nail the interview. Now Emily actually refers her friends to you and she hasn’t ever even met you! Thanks, Kevin, for everything you did for me and my family! – Steve D, Regional Manager, Professional Services Company

The “golf lesson” that could change your life…not just your swing

Golf is one of the more challenging games you’ll ever play. Believe it or not, your job search is a lot like golf. At a glance, they are both basic and simple. In golf it’s “see the ball, swing the club, hit the ball and repeat.” In a job search, it’s “see the job opening, apply to
the job, interview and get hired.” But, you know it is never that easy.

In golf, you work with a Pro, take a lesson and learn the right grip, stance, and swing. You get a sense of what you are doing wrong and learn to adjust each aspect to play better.

Looking for a job is no different. The standard tools out there – search firms, job boards, etc. – lead you to believe it’s as easy as combining a good resume, a solid cover letter and the knowledge that you can to the job. The reality is that, just like a golf swing, the process is much more complex than that.

So why not turn to a trusted pro to get you the results you want?

Tiger Woods, Tom Brady and Michael Phelps all turn to coaches to help them stay at the top of their profession.
Shouldn’t you give yourself the same advantage?

You may be surprised to know that over 50% of my clients have been C Level Executives – CEO’s, COO’s, CIO’s and CFO’s. They understand – just like professional athletes – the importance of having someone working with you who is focused on your success. And, in this case, getting the best, tailored information for their job search. They are remaining “students to the game” which is exactly why they have risen to the top of their careers. And why they will stay there.

Now, you can benefit from the same program I designed for these C Level Executives – no matter where you are in your career.

As a CEO, I have usually turned to search firms when I was looking to make a move. Kevin was able to make me a much better advocate for myself. His insights into career management, networking and uncovering opportunities are nothing short of spectacular. In my case, he helped me turn a simple networking call into the ideal opportunity. – T. Lincoln, CEO, Fortune 1000 Manufacturer

Let my 10 years of inside information get you the interviews you want — and the job you deserve

Your career is the biggest investment you’ll ever make. So you need to be sure the person you choose to work with you has the right experience. After all, you wouldn’t choose a financial advisor out of the yellow pages!

My background assures you get the insights and information you need. I have:

- 10+ years running a talent acquisition and executive search firm (and still doing it!). So I know exactly how this process works inside and out – and what it takes for your resume to get you an interview…

- Helped hundreds of people get hired – in good and bad economies alike!

- Consulted with companies of all sizes and industries on their internal recruiting practices. I know FIRST HAND what they are looking, how the selection processes work and how to make them work for you

- A decade’s worth of ”inside” information. You get insights from my thousands of conversations with HR mangers, VPs and C Level Executives on how to get the interview, exactly which techniques work and which don’t.

Plus…

- Your program will be tailored exclusively for you. I know your situation and objectives are uniquely yours so the solution to achieve your goals must be just as unique.

- As a result of how much time I spend with each client, I limit the number of people I take into the program at any one time. It’s the only way I can guarantee you the level of personal attention you deserve.

“I’ll see how my search goes. If I think I need help, I will be in touch”

Look, I know a lot of people don’t recognize the value of job coaching right away. But once you begin the process, you’ll wonder how you got this far in your career without it.

Just for a second, think about golf again. Most of us hit the links, tried teaching ourselves (it looked easy, right?) and ended up with mediocre results and being frustrated.

So, we go to a Pro thinking we’ll learn what to do – only to find out that first we have to un-learn what we’re doing wrong. Imagine how much easier it would have been if you took the lesson first? You job search is no different – but there is a lot more at stake than a high handicap.

Think about this: If there is a company you are really interested in or a position that would be the perfect next step in your career, don’t you owe it to yourself to have a true strategy to get it? The economy is tight and the job market is muddled. Working together, we can make sure you stand out on your very first presentation to a company – and make the impression you want?

If our coaching session had ended after our first two-hour meeting, I would have felt like I got my money’s worth. Your knowledge of how to work my job search process better has made all the difference – R. Thomas, VP of Sales, Software Manufacturer

“Kevin, my situation is tough…I don’t know if you can help me”

Honestly, I get this comment more than any other. And my response depends less upon your situation than it does on you. If you are ready to accept coaching, ready to make a change and ready to get the career you deserve – then I guarantee this program is for you.

It doesn’t matter if you are looking for a promotion, a new career or just simply looking for a job, this program will help you get it. And we work together until you get the job you want.

As long as you are ready to take the next step, I know I can help you get any job you want. There hasn’t been anyone in my program who I haven’t been able to help. It is as simple as that.

The job market in Detroit is tough. I was amazed at how well you understood that. Especially since you don’t live here. What helped me the most though was how you walked me through every step of the interview process and showed me how to get past the roadblocks. In the past, I would have just walked away from those companies. With your help, I was able to take what sounded like rejection and turn it into two job offers. – J.
**********

A Note from Kevin

Me? Old? Never!

I consider myself a pretty healthy and fit guy. Last year I ran my first ultra-marathon, I watch what I eat, and do everything I can to keep my mind and body in a state about ten years younger than I really am. This past week I discovered that the power of positive thinking will only get you so far. I managed to throw my back out and still have no idea how I did so.

My reaction was 100%, Grade-A male: ignore it and hope it would go away. The Infantryman in me said “suck it up!” But, I should have remembered sooner what an old Colonel of mine used to say, “Hope is not a method.” So, I sought out some advice. I talked to a few friends – one who has way too much experience with his back going out and one who publishes medical information. It turns out that neither of them recommended standing around a birthday party full of 12-year-old girls for 3 hours. Who knew? Anyway, I took their advice (well, some of it at least…I am still a guy), took some medicine and finally forced myself to rest. It is now close to being fully mended.

I share this story because I found it quite ironic. Here I am in the business of helping people take the action they need to make a real difference in their lives when they are looking for a new job or building their career, yet here I was hoping my back would just get better on its own. I realized taking care of your back is like taking care of your career or anything in your life: It requires you to take action – and the right action – to get the results you want. Because hope is not a method – and it sure isn’t a medical treatment!

Looking for Calmer Seas?

On the heels of last week’s article on “The Next Big Thing,” comes the second most common question I hear: What is a stable industry to get into right now? My response: Stability has less to do with your industry than it has to do with you. Keep reading to find out how.

Taking it to eleven,

This month’s webinars have been a success and wrapped up today. I will be running more in December, which will be published both here and on the website.

Last week, I offered you a special 20% discount on the pre-order of my newest Job Search and Career Management Solutions as my way of saying “thank you.” It seems though that the hyperlinks weren’t working and, in an effort to get it just right, I am further tweaking those pages before I release them to you. So, I will be sending you an email this weekend announcing their release and extended the promotion from November 30 until December 10. These DVD’s will be ready for shipment the second week of December.

Where to Find True Stability

Make sure you are focused on what will truly create stability

Last week I talked about how to determine where you should focus industry-wise if looking to make a career shift. Right along with being asked, “What are some good areas to be in right now?” I am often asked about “stability” as it relates to an industry. Too many people confuse “growth” with “stability” in making career decisions. While there are some industry sectors that are more volatile than others, I firmly believe that your professional stability has much more to do with you than the company you work for or sector you work in.

My search firm, Hammer Consulting, places software sales executives. For years my business partner and I have been saying that there is no stability in software sales in the traditional sense. It is an acquisition-driven industry where the smaller companies serve as incubators for new technology and either a) get gobbled up by larger publicly traded companies or b) go public themselves. As a small, privately held companies, they are more likely to fail than succeed. As a large, publicly held company, they are subject to Wall Street’s mood swings. A stock downgrade means lay-offs. This leaves the sales executives wondering how they can count on their company. In short, they cannot. But, they can depend upon themselves.

What I have shared with countless sales executives also applies to you (regardless of your industry). Stability resides within you. As you build your career through accomplishments – meeting and exceeding goals set for you, taking on greater responsibilities and challenges (see Career Swamp) – you create stability in the only brand and product you can truly control: you. While choosing industries that are growing can create opportunities, they do not guarantee them. It is up to you to seize them and make them reality. Ultimately, your ability to do this will create a marketable product that is resilient to an up or down economy: you. This is at the core of what I teach through my Branding Yourself for Maximum Success DVD.

I have been showing clients in my One-on-One Job Search Coaching Program how it is actually easier to showcase a background in meeting and exceeding standards during a down economy rather than when things are good. Everyone can achieve success when the fruit is hanging low. It is a rare breed that can deliver results when the economy is less than ideal. And right now is when companies need that kind of leadership to make it through this storm.

So, as you look to create a more stable situation for yourself and your family — and in your career, your focus needs to be inward not outward. Build your brand, solidify your track record and your reputation. This is something tangible that you can take with you anywhere and transcends any industry or economy.

A Week of Reflection and Sage Advice

As many of you know, my grandmother passed away this week. I have done my best to reach out to everyone who called, emailed and sent their condolences. Your words and thoughts meant a great deal and were greatly appreciated. Again, a heartfelt “thank you” to everyone.

As my family gathered this week, we did as many do in times like this– reflect. Henria Krepps had what I would describe as a challenging life. In spite of this, she maintained a very positive and determined attitude, a resilient spirit and an endearing quality that made space for her in many people’s hearts. For me though, I had one of the most memorable and powerful conversations of my life with her. I had just made a major life decision and she told me she knew it was the right one for me. Her exact words were, “Kev, your eyes have looked dead for years and you look much happier now.” During this difficult time in my life, she made it very clear to me how important it was for me to find what it was that made me happy and go after it. On top of that, how important it was to simply go out and have the life you want.

This may all sound rather basic, but I find so many are lacking this in their careers and personal lives. Much of what I aim to do through this e-zine, the blog/website and my job search/career management solutions is provide tools to help you achieve just that: the career you deserve. So, this is my way of saying “thank you” to her for giving me the guidance and inspiration to find what it is I love to do and create a life that makes me happy. I hope you are fortunate enough to have someone like that in your life too.

These Times They Are a Changin’

Take one look at me and I doubt you would think I was a big fan of Bob Dylan. But, that aside, I saw no better person to pull a quote from than him this month. The marketplace is in flux (to be kind about it) and, as you weigh your options in making a move, many always ask – “What is the next ‘big thing’”? I will talk about that plus how to make sure you are pursuing a career, not a trend.

Taking it to eleven,

Kevin
______________________________________________________________________

Feature Article

The Next Big Thing

Make sure your career move isn’t following a fad

“What are some good areas to be in right now?” This is a question I am asked daily by my coaching clients and, to put it simply, a very loaded one. While I think there are some industries that have a promising future (see below), I think there are some bigger questions to answer that lie within you – not the marketplace. So, here are some things to consider:

There are a handful of verticals that look to be growth oriented. Alternative energy is one area that will only continue to grow, particularly if the Obama administration makes good on its energy initiatives. “Green” technologies, solutions and business also show promise, but some are more viable than others. Technology that provides a low cost (SaaS – Software as a Service, Virtualization and Cloud Computing) and solid return on investment (ROI) is very promising. As well businesses (consulting, services or technology) revolving around financial compliance.

Do What You Like, Like What You Do. Any fans of the “Life is Good” brand will know this slogan. But, it is a good one to live by. Whatever path you chose, you need to feel passion and the desire to evangelize for it. But, as I always warn, make sure not to put emotion over intelligence. To borrow from the “green” movement, ask yourself this simply question: “Is it sustainable?”

Warren Buffet says, “Investment must be rational; if you don’t understand it, don’t do it.” Your career path is your largest investment and the seed from which all else grows, so I think heeding his advice is key here. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If after interviewing with a company their enthusiasm outweighs what seems to be a sketchy plan, it might be wise to keep moving. Bottom line: if it doesn’t make sense, you should pass.

Remember, don’t confuse finding a growth-oriented industry or vertical with stability. Stability resides in the you, not within the industry, vertical or company. More on that next week!

Taking on challenges is sometimes described as “character building.” As cliché as this might sound, we take it a step further. It is vital to your career lifeline. By taking the easy road, many end up with jobs that are bringing no value from a professional, much less personal, growth standpoint. For them, the path of least resistance becomes a career swamp.

Having interviewed thousands of professionals, I have seen two consistent traits in those who have had exceptional careers. First, from an early age they sought out challenges. This can be seen in the courses they chose in school, the sports they played and, ultimately, the jobs they took. Second, when they no longer feel they are being challenged, they move on. As professionals, this is spawned by poor leadership, no advancement, poor training, inferior products, no income growth or lack of job excitement. Often, this means leaving a position where things were going “fine” for a new challenge.

The second point is always met with the question: “Why does he/she want to leave if things are going so well?” Our response is simple: for a new challenge. They are confident in their abilities to succeed in anything they set out to do. Moreover, the successful executive looking to hire relates all too well. Borrowed from my favorite little green Jedi master, they adhere to the philosophy of: “Do or do not. There is no try.”

If you are continually seeing your peers pass you by, don’t be afraid to make a change. This may require you stepping outside of your comfort zone, but this is how we grow and evolve. With children, we are constantly encouraging them to broaden their horizons and try new things. As adults, the principle still applies.

I plan to periodically post some random tips for interviewing on this blog. These will come in spurts – sometimes a single thought and other times a stream. Today’s are centered largely around a sales interview, but the points can apply to all. I would recommend taking a look at my free webinars on topics relating to interviewing and your job search

1) When interviewing for a sales position, make sure your resume and cover letter DO NOT INCLUDE phrases like “Big Game Hunter,” “Closer,” or “Top Sales Guy.” Instead, use metrics to illustrate your achievements: “Ranked 2 out of 15 in my region” or “Achieved 125% of a 2.0 million dollar quota” or “Made President’s Club 4 out of the 5 past years.” Quantify and qualify your achievements with numbers, no adjectives.

2) Do not talk about pipelines in an interview. Stay focused on deals closed and percentage of quota achieved. No one wants to hire the sales professional that “almost” got it done. Whether you realize it or not, by doing this you are actually detailing your failures – not achievements.

3) Speak to the position for which you are interviewing. One thing I will hear sales professionals say often is how they are really “big picture guys.” If you are interviewing for a strategic position (sales leadership, Alliances, BD, etc.) then this sounds sophomoric and cliché. Again, get into the details of what you have done (words versus deeds). If you are interviewing for an individual contributor position, a statement that is off target like this will paint you as someone who is seeking this job as a stop gap.
